Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She’s so desperate to reach the realm that she’s willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.

When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he’s been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe…

My Elevator Pitch: Starflight is a strange (but perfect) combination of Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean. There is one scene that is basically Jack Sparrow and Han Solo having a run in while snarky Leia is watching and rolling her eyes. I have also heard it compared to Firefly but I can neither confirm nor deny this (I haven’t watched Firefly I AM SORRY DON’T YELL AT ME).

The plot of this book gripped me right away. Solara is trying to get to the outer realm for a job but can’t afford to get there. This leaves her with finding someone to pay her way in exchange for servitude. Enters ex-classmate and rich boy Doran. Solara quickly finds out that this arrangement isn’t going to work for her so she takes matters into her own hands. There are smugglers and pirates and a wedding and disguises plus a couple twists I didn’t see coming. This book is fast paced and full of action & swoons!

I absolutely love Solara! She is can be cutthroat at times because she will fight for what is important to her and she does what it takes to get where she needs to go. On top of that she is also smart are very knowledgeable on how to fix things. This gets both into and out of trouble. She tends to speak her mind which leads to plenty of fun and snarky banter between her and Doran. I was not expecting Doran to grow on me as much as he did! I wasn’t going to give him a chance to prove himself but he definitely came around.

I grew to love the rest of the crew! They each have their own quirks that add to the story. I am excited to read about them more in the second book, which to my understanding is going to be companion stye and feature Cassia and Kane!!

Starflight could have used a little more world-building in my opinion. Science fiction can get away with a lot less world building than fantasy but there are still some thing that need to be answered. We know that Earth is still Earth because Doran has childhood memories of living there but how long has space travel and living on different planets been around? Not everything needs a concrete answer (this is fiction after all) but there were some scenarios I would have liked more. This book might work more for those who don’t typically read science fiction because those elements seemed secondary to romance.

Overall I really enjoyed this one! I loved the characters and the romance. I cannot wait for book 2 but I will definitely be checking out Landers’ other series in the meantime.

Queen of Shadows Blog Tour: Blueberry Tarts + giveaway!

Hello my friends! Today I have an incredibly exciting post. It’s been about year since I posted some tasty things for the Thirteen Days of Ash & Fire blog tour that I hosted with Alexa, Rachel, Jaz and Judith. We founded the Maas Thirteen and sort of made ourselves Sarah J. Maas’s unofficial street team. We got the gang back together to celebrate the release of the latest installment in the Throne of Glass series: Queen of Shadows. Have you heard of it? I didn’t think so. Maybe my delicious treats inspired by the series will inspire you to pick up and drool with us. Note: you can drool over food or hot men, both are acceptable!

There is no surprise that Sarah adds some delicious sounding food to her books. Celeana enjoys sweets quite a bit and I knew when she mentioned blueberry tart, I had to try and recreate for myself. I did also debate between doing a pear tart or a lemon cookie! (There is nothing stopping me from making either of these in the future.)

I have never made a tart. Most recipes I found online were for a single tart (think like a pie) and since I don’t have an actual tart pan, I just used a pie dish. The base recipe I used was from Liv for Cake and I changed a few things. I used frozen blueberries rather than fresh blueberries since blueberry season just ended. This prevented my tart from getting bonus points for visual.

PicMonkey Collage

The end result? DELICIOUS! I am actually surprised on how simple making this turned out to be. I would definitely make this again but I would make the crust have raised edges because my blueberries feel off fairly easily. But I found that the frozen blueberries worked perfectly! I also had some fun pretending to be Manon with the blueberry juices that look similar to blood (I can’t help it! I just love Manon’s character!!)

(seriously check out the amazing posts!!)

Detective Hart asked a few more questions. Did I notice if they had gotten in a car? No. Was a name even spoken? Not that I recalled. Did they say anything to the man they shot? I wasn’t sure. Eventually, he got up and left the room to retrieve some photos they wanted me to look at.

I was alone with Colton.

Any other time I probably would’ve been beside myself with nervousness, but at this point, I barely registered his presence. All I wanted to do was go home and forget this night.

My gaze slowly lifted at the sound of my name. His voice was deep and gruff—a morning voice.

He leaned toward me, placing his arms on the table. Short dark hairs dusted powerful forearms. The few times I’d seen him over the years, I hadn’t been in close proximity to him, but now I could see the tiny differences between the Colton I’d admired from afar in high school and the one sitting in front of me, some ten years later. Fine lines had formed around the corners of his eyes. His jaw seemed harder, and the five-o’clock shadow was something new.

Something sexy.

I really needed to stop thinking in general.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Abby?” he asked, and real concern filled his voice.

I shook my head slowly as a shiver raced down my spine. “Yes. No? I’m sorry. I’m so tired.”

“I can imagine.” He glanced at the door as he moved his shoulders, as if working out a kink. “We’ll get you home soon.”

Slouching in the metal chair, I sighed. “Is this…the start of your shift or…?”

Colton’s cobalt gaze tracked back to me. “I usually get off around eight, but we work in cycles for homicide calls. It was our weekend.”

“Sorry,” I whispered, and then frowned. “I don’t even know why I apologized. It’s got to be hard working those kinds of hours, having to be on call.”

“I imagine it is for some, especially those with a family.” One side of his lips quirked up, and despite the dire situation, my stomach dipped a bit. He lifted his left hand. “Obviously, I’m not married. I wouldn’t know.”

SCORCHED Excerpt :

“You’ve been avoiding me all day.”

“Have not.”

He cocked his head to the side and raised both brows. “You practically hid in your room or attached yourself to Syd all day.”

“I was…I was spending girl-time with her,” I said. “And napping.”

He’d been right. I had avoided him. Apparently, I wasn’t doing that great of a job of it.

“The same with last night. You barely talked to me.”

“What?” Dumbfounded, I felt like screaming that word. “I barely talked to you? You ignored me.”

He stared at me. “Andy, I—“

“This is stupid. This whole thing is stupid.” I lifted the bottle.

A moment passed and he asked, “Do you really think you need another beer?”

Annoyed, I slowly brought the bottle to my mouth and took a long drink. “Does that answer your question?”

The hue of his blue eyes deepened. “Look, I’m not trying to be a dick—“

“You might want to try harder. Just sayin’ Might just be my opinion, but thought I’d share.”

He opened his mouth and then snapped it shut. Several seconds passed. “You know, I didn’t’ say that shit to you to piss you off.”

I wanted to point out everything he’d done to piss me off, but…but shit on a brick. Anything that I told him would betray how I felt about him, and well, I was already embarrassing myself enough without going there. “You breathed,” I decided, nodding, and totally proud of myself. “How about that?”

Shaking his head, he rested his elbows on the island. “You can usually do better than that.”

“It’s not worth my time to do better.” I flounced past him. Well, I might have staggered past him, but in my head, I flounced like a Grade A Uppity Chick, and it was awesome.

“I wish you wouldn’t drink so much.”

My feet stopped. Dammit. My feet had a mind of their own, and they had stopped because he’d said that so quietly, not with an ounce of derision or scorn. Actually, it sounded like a plea. The alcohol churned in my stomach. All I could see was his look of pity.

“Why do you drink like this?” he asked.

To relax. To not act like a freak. To forget. To remember. To be funny. To have people like me. To not care if they do or don’t. To have fun. To just not care. A burning sensation rolled down my back as my head continued to shout out the answers. I just didn’t want to care.

I didn’t say any of that. “You drink.”

“I do. And sometimes I drink and I get drunk, but not every time.”

Slowly, I faced him. He wasn’t looking at me. His eyes were on the island. “I don’t get drunk every time.”

He shook his head again. “Andrea, you either get plastered or damn near close. Every time.”

“That’s not…” I trailed off, and yeah, even I could see where he was right. I could probably count on one hand how many times I’d only had two beers or two shots and then stopped. Come to think of it, I wasn’t sure if I ever had.

“My dad got shitfaced all the time,” he continued. “Never thought that I’d be interested in a girl who was the same way.”

My brain registered two things at once. He was interested in me, which wasn’t a big duh. I mean, he’d had his hands in my pants more than once, so yeah, I should’ve known that. But he compared me to his dad, a man I’d recently discovered he pretty much loathed, which pretty much canceled out the first part. Hurt invaded every cell and festered under the skin. The back of my throat burned and I wanted to rush away.

But I didn’t. “That kind of makes you twisted.”

Another weak laugh came out of him. “I guess it kind of does.”

SCORCHED Synopsis:

Sometimes life leaves a mark…

Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.

Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.

Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Sometimes life makes you work for that happily ever after…

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she’s curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn’t mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They’re the good guys. They protect people. They’re…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club’s most respected member—is in town, he’s gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it’s his shot at his dream. What he doesn’t count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Blog Tour: Would You Rather…With Sarah J. Maas! (+ giveaway)

I am sure this comes as no surprise but I loved A Court of Thorns and Roses. I have fallen in love with yet another beautiful world created by Sarah. Throne of Glass is one of my all time favorite series but ACOTAR is giving it a run for its money. I am SO excited to have Sarah on the blog today to have a bit of fun with “Would You Rather Questions”.

ACOTAR blog tour banner

  1. Which faerie tale would you rather live out: Cinderella or Beauty & the Beast?
That’s actually a tough call! I think Cinderella is such an underestimated heroine—people call her a doormat, but…I think it takes tremendous, tremendous strength to endure that sort of abuse for years and still retain your kindness, still keep your heart open and hoping. That said, I’m not quite a fan of the love story in Cinderella (though I do love me some sexy-ass princes!), and think the romance in Beauty and the Beast is just…perfect. (Yeah, yeah, Stockholm Syndrome, I know. I still love the story.) So, I’d say Beauty and the Beast, for the romance and mystery and atmosphere.
  2. Would you rather live in a world without magic or live in a world with magic but be cursed with a masquerade mask, as they are in A Court of Thorns and Roses?
Are we talking a permanent curse? Or one that’s got some wiggle room to be broken? Because, if it’s the latter, then definitely magic. I will take that mask and I will rock it if I can do some cool-ass shit with my magic.
  3. Would your weapon of choice be a bow and arrow or a sword?
Well, with a bow/arrow, you could potentially run out of arrows and be screwed, so…sword. A really badass one, like what Celaena has on the cover of Queen of Shadows.
  4. Would you rather only write romantic scenes or only action scenes?
….Romantic scenes. Or maybe romantic action scenes (best of both worlds?). I don’t know—some of my favorite scenes in ACOTAR are action sequences, but then when I’m drafting, my reward scenes are usually romance bits. Such an impossible question!
  5. Would you rather see A Court of Thorns of Roses turned into a movie or TV show?
Oooh. I’m so obsessed with TV that I’ll say TV, but I actually think it’d work just as well (perhaps better?) as a film. Fingers crossed either happens one day!

Thank you SO much to Sarah (and Bloomsbury!) for allowing me to be apart of this tour. If you haven’t picked up your copy of ACOTAR yet, what are you waiting for??

16096824When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristen Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!

When brainstorming ideas for my post with my fellow hosts, I knew as soon as someone mentioned food of the Throne of Glass world I was sold! I love baking and have recently been testing my skills at cooking. I contacted Sarah as well as browsed my Kindle copies of the books for quotes and ideas for food of the Throne of Glass world. Today I present you with my creations! Making my choices was hard because Celeana loves to eat. The first item I have today was my easy choice…Chocolate Hazelnut cupcakes! Chocolate Hazelnut has come up several times in the series…

In Throne of Glass, Celaena talks about hazelnut truffles and how chocolate is important (which it TOTALLY is!)

All of her favorites were there: chocolate-covered gummies, chocolate almond bark, berry-shaped chews, gem–shaped hard sugar, peanut brittle, plain brittle, sugarlace, frosted red licorice, and, most importantly, chocolate. She popped a hazelnut truffle into her mouth. ‘Someone,’ she said in between chews, ‘is very good to me.’

In Crown of Midnight a very special cake just happens to be chocolate hazelnut…

When they’d eaten the last crumb of chocolate-hazelnut cake and drunk the last of the sparkling wine, and when the servants had cleared everything away and bid their farewells, Celaena found herself standing on the small balcony at the far edge of the roof, the summer plants buried under a blanket of snow.

And last but not least we have Celaena once again swooning over chocolate hazelnut truffles. This is a scene that involves Celaena and a new character Rowan.

She pointed out the pretty sign swaying in the sea breeze. Confectionery. ‘If we can’t win them with charm, we might as well win them with our business’

‘Did you somehow not hear what I just-‘ But she had already reached the shop which smelled divine and was stocked with chocolates and candies and oh gods, hazelnut truffles.

I pulled my recipe for the chocolate-hazelnut cupcakes from Bird On A Cake.

11111    33

These turned out fabulously! They are super moist and a great flavor. The only thing I would change would to have a stronger hazelnut flavor in the actual cake (most of the hazelnut flavor comes from the frosting). I am going to keep my eye out for hazelnut extract and maybe add some next time I decide to make these because I am definitely adding these into my cupcake rotation.

My next dish I made was couscous! Sarah recommended this one, saying she thought it would be something found in The Assassin and the Desert (e-book novella, also part of The Assassin’s Blade). I have never made couscous but I was excited to try, especially after looking up some recipes and drooling a bit at the pictures. I am extremely pleased with the outcome! Even my sister, who isn’t a picky eater but she’s not a very adventurous eater, loved it. I was originally was going to go with couscous with peppers and chickpeas but found this recipe from Epicurious that used zucchini. I have a zucchini plant and knew this would be the perfect way to round out the dish.

I used spices I’ve never used before and wow am I blown away! I was also surprised with the addition of mint and lemon juice to this dish. I didn’t think it would work but every few bites I could taste it and it was phenomenal. I rounded out the meal with a glass of ice water with lemon because it’s totally what Celaena would do..”Celaena took a long, long sip of water. It was flavored with slices of lemon—and was unbelievably delicious.

“Lost and broken, Celaena Sardothien’s only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan’s Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn. Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King’s Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan’s biggest threat – and his own toughest enemy.

While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beastly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?”
