Funny story. When I first met Katie on Twitter I though her handle, @polishedpage, was because she is Polish. I’m not proud of it, all I can say is I was blinded by my own Polish-ness and, well… you know the stereotype. But, I saw the error of my ways and admired Katie for combining two of my favorite things, nail polish and books! When I joined the blog I was pumped to start doing more bookish manis, but lack of confidence and adult life has been holding me back. Since this month is special and we’re trying to make every giveaway post unique and awesome we agreed to live up to our name. Today we’re giving away a copy of This Shattered World signed by both Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner and an arc for Starflight byMelissa Landers. Space-y huh? Hence the galaxy mani 😉
I was going to do a orange and pink pastel galaxy, to match the book, but I love blues and when I found this tutorial I had to try this one, and I was not disappointed!
I started with searching the world wide web for the tutorial that didn’t totally scare me, and one that I liked. I found this one by Nails by Kizzy and I was like ‘yeah.. I can do that, maybe’.
I started on Monday with a base coat of Blue Freeze by Maybelline Color Show (one of my fave drug store brands). I did the base two days early because I always run into the problem where I don’t let my nails dry long enough and then I get smudges like 20 minutes after I think they’re dry. So by laying down the first two coats of the dark blue I could make sure to avoid those mistakes. Success! So today I was ready to get spacey.
First I had to sponge on some white to lay the groundwork for the galaxy, I used a little baby sample of OPI. I sponged Onyx Rush by Maybelline Color Show along the edges of my galaxy. This was perfect because since I did the blue on Monday it was starting to wear at the tips of my nails. I easily covered that up with the black. Sponging on the polish was so messy and I was so worried I was totally messing up, but in the end it was magic. I used Blue Me Away! by Sally Hansen and Aquamarine Azulino by Color Club for my blues. Then went back over the blue with the white again before finishing it up with Disco Ball by Sally Hansen and some white dots for bigger stars.
I had a lot of fun doing this and now I’m more confident that I can actually do more nail art as long as I focus and take my time. Things I learned after doing this galaxy mani; less is more. I couldn’t find any sponges like the ones used in the video (although I didn’t look that hard, just at Walgreens… which does not carry sponges like this) so I had to be extra careful while using small pieces of a normal sponge which globbed on a little more than I would’ve liked, especially the last coat of white on the top. I feel like it covered up too much of the blue and I’m sad. BUT now I know for the future. Don’t skimp on the sponges people! Head my warning.
