Katie Recommends…Graphic Novels! #1

I have really fallen in love with graphic novels and comics in the last year. Just wanted to share a quick post with my favorites I’ve read.

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson (Author) and Adrian Alphona (Artist)
Published October 30th 2014 by Marvel

Kamala was your ordinary teenage girl until WAM BAM the event that gives her super powers happens. You get to read as she finds out what is happening to her (and maybe laugh along the way). Of course this has elements that make it like “every other super hero comic” but it is also so DIFFERENT. Hello awesome Pakistani female main character! I am really excited to see how her culture and family dynamic plays into her story. Also? I ALREADY HAVE A SHIP AND IT IS SO SHIPPY, I LOVE IT.

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Br156534ian K. Vaughan (Author), Pia Guerra (Illustrator), José Marzán Jr. (Illustrator)
Published January 2nd 2003 by Vertigo

This is my second graphic novel series written by Vaughan and WOW is it good!! I had to run out to the nearest bookstore to pick up volume 2 right away. I am slowly making my way through volume 2 but I may have to buy the next few volumes at once.  A guy actually saw me reading on the bus and asked if it was my first time reading. Once he found out he told me it’s the best end to a comic series he has ever read. How can I not want to binge the entire series right this second??

Published October 23rd 2012 by Image Comics

If you asked me what comic sparked by interest in comics/graphic novels I would 100% say Saga. I casually read an issue here or there of various series but when I picked up the first bind up of Saga I feel in love. The story is just as beautiful as the art. I haven’t been so pulled into a story in a long time and I just want to know what is going to happen next!! I know everyone is recommending these but I can say they have totally lived up to the hype for me.

Have you read any of these? Do you have any recommendations of graphic novels I should check out?

I haven’t read these but Ms Marvel looks good! For recommendations… Hmm. The last graphic art / comic book I read was Literary Life by Posey Simmonds and it was sooooo good. Very funny and honest. It’s more a series of observations though, than a novel.
