1 crush on your best friend +
1 gorgeous, scheming new girl +
1 Mathletics competition =
1 big mess
Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy.
SOLVING FOR EX is a YA contemporary romance that remixes Mansfield Park as Clueless meets Mean Girls in a crazy mix of high school society, mathletic competition, and teenage romance.
This book has the most perfect description. I knew I soon as I read “Clueless meets Mean Girls” I had to get my hands on this book ASAP. Ashley had to move to a new school because of bullying and found a friend in Brendan. She begins to crush on him hard but doesn’t want to admit it to him because she doesn’t want to lose what she feels is her only friend. She soon loses her “new girl” status at school when twins Sofia and Vincent transfer. Sofia brings with her, her mean girl attitude and Vincent brings his smile that makes all the girls swoon but he only has eyes for one girl.
Ashley was a great main character. She was smart, cute and at times awkward. Her crush on Brendan is something that is so real and can be really hard to deal with as a teenager. Do I tell him I like him and potentially lose him as a friend? Brendan starts to see Sofia and this destroys Ashley’s world not just because it gets in the way of her confessing her feelings but because it’s with her new arch nemesis. Sofia was a great “villain” character that I cannot wait to read about more in the companion novel later in the year. Sofia is everything Ashley is not and this created a great dynamic between the two as well as interactions with he other characters.
The overall story wasn’t incredibly unique but was cute nonetheless. I really liked the inclusion of all the mathletes and competitions and preparations. There were a few plot twists I did not see coming and even the ones I did I full enjoyed. This book is filled with fun, swoony times and I would definitely recommend picking up if you are in fact a fan of Clueless or Mean Girls!
