In The Boyfriend App by Katie Sise, super-smart, somewhat geeky Audrey McCarthy can’t wait to get out of high school. Her father’s death and the transformation of her one-time BFF, Blake Dawkins, into her worst nightmare have her longing for the new start college will bring.

But college takes money. So Audrey decides she has to win the competition for the best app designed by a high schooler—and the $200,000 that comes with it. She develops something she calls the Boyfriend App, and suddenly she’s the talk of the school and getting kissed by the hottest boys around. But can the Boyfriend App bring Audrey true love?

The characters were probably my favorite part of this book! It was great to read a heroine who was smart and not a complete hermit. Audrey is a great main character but the supporting characters, mainly her best friends, really helped me enjoy this story. I felt that there was a great deal of diversity in this book and that was great to see. I also really enjoyed the setting of the story because I personally love the campus of Notre Dame and the surrounding area. At one point I was convinced I was going to go to college at Notre Dame but then I saw the price tag and the SAT score you needed and decided otherwise.

This book took a weird turn of events. There is a twist that causes some drama in some of the students’ lives as well as the competition.  I did not see this coming and also was a bit confused by it at first. I know I had to re-read what was happening again to make sure I understood what happened. This is the point that the book lost me a bit. Once I comprehended its purpose it made more sense but I was still like “there was no other way of writing this?”

Overall this was a cute and quick read that I did enjoy. It was nice to see a girl who was actually into computers because there seems to be a lack of them. She was smart so I never found myself saying “Really?!” which was a nice change of pace for female YA characters.

I’ve been eyeing this book for awhile. I don’t read a lot of contemporary YA, but this one sounds as if it has a unique premise.

It is nice to see smart YA girls! And computer-savvy ones.
